WeChat for Travelers in China

Stay in touch, explore local services and make everyday payments.

Your host sends a photo of the entrance. A guide shares tomorrow’s meeting point. At lunch, a table code opens a menu. WeChat brings these small parts of a trip together through messaging, local services and payments.1, 5, 10

You can register with an overseas mobile number, and English is available. Start with the features you need; payment setup is a separate step. In mainland China, the payment service is called Weixin Pay, also commonly called WeChat Pay.1, 3, 10

Set Up Before Your Trip

  1. Install and register

Use the official download links on this page. Register with your own mobile number and country code, then follow the verification prompts. Keep access to that number for SMS codes while travelling.3, 4

  2. Get your account ready

Choose a name your contacts will recognise. Add a host or guide if they have shared their WeChat details, and send a short introduction. Complete any security checks requested before departure.

  3. Add payments if you want them

Look for Me → Services → Wallet, then Add a Card; labels may vary. Link your own eligible card and complete the identity or bank checks shown. Have your passport ready. You do not need to finish payment setup to use basic messaging.1, 3, 4

Using WeChat on Your Trip

A conversation that travels with you

Add someone using their WeChat ID or contact QR code. For a Chinese message, press and hold it and choose Translate. A photo of an entrance or a shared location can also make a meeting point easier to understand.1, 6

Scan to Order Food

At restaurants and cafés that offer mobile ordering, a QR code on the table or counter can open the menu on your phone. Open Scan in WeChat and scan the restaurant’s ordering code. It may open a Mini Program—a small service inside WeChat, so there is no separate app to download.5

Check the branch and any table number or pickup location shown, then choose your food or drinks. Review the quantities and total before submitting. Follow the restaurant’s payment instructions and look for an order confirmation or collection number. Opening the menu alone does not place an order.5

If the menu is in Chinese, look for a translation option where available. If the page asks for details you cannot provide, or payment does not work, show the screen to staff and ask them to help you order.5, 7

Use an ordering code for the menu; a payment-only QR code is used to settle a bill. Mini Programs can also provide shop and attraction services. For reservations, start with the venue’s official website or its on-site code, and check that it matches the place you intended.5, 10

A little help with written Chinese

For a printed menu or sign in front of you, open Scan and look for Translate. Treat machine translation as a guide, and double-check important details such as dates and prices.6, 7

Paying with Weixin Pay

  • You scan: scan the merchant’s payment code, then check the recipient, amount, selected card and any fee before confirming.10
  • They scan: open your payment code, confirm the amount with the cashier and check the selected card before showing it. Check the payment result afterwards.10

An overseas card is for eligible merchant purchases; it does not fund transfers to friends or red packets. If a code opens a personal transfer, ask for the merchant payment option.4

The standard international-card service fee is waived for payments of ¥200 or less; above ¥200, it is normally 3% of the full amount. Eligible promotions may waive it. Check the charge shown in the app and any separate fees from your card issuer.8, 9

For more payment options and help with declined transactions, see Money & Payments.

If You Get Stuck

Registration asks for extra verification

Follow the options shown on your screen. If assistance from another user is requested, check the eligibility rules displayed and ask someone you know who meets them. For missing SMS codes, check your country code and that the line can receive messages. Use the help option on the verification screen if needed.

My card links, but a payment fails

Read the error, check for a bank approval request, and confirm you are paying a merchant. If the result is unclear, check your transaction history before retrying. Use another accepted payment method if needed; linking a card does not guarantee every checkout will accept it.4

A Mini Program will not accept my details

Look for a passport option or overseas country-code selector. For reservations, use the venue’s other official booking channel if your details are unsupported. Translation does not change which phone numbers, documents or cards the service accepts.
