Domestic Flights in China: A First-Timer’s Guide
Make the longer journeys easier, from booking to boarding.
China is a big country, and a flight can bring a distant part of your trip within easy reach. You might combine high-speed trains between nearby cities with a flight for the longer stretch. This guide covers flights within mainland China; international journeys and flights to Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan involve different procedures.

Fly or Take the Train?
Start with the whole journey: getting to the airport, check-in, the flight, and the trip to your next hotel. A short flight does not always mean a shorter travel day.
For a long jump across the country, look at nonstop flights first. Between nearby cities, compare a direct high-speed train. If the total time is similar, choose the arrival time and airport or station that fit your plans.

Book Your Flight
Book through the airline’s official website or a platform such as Trip.com. Enter your name as shown in your passport and follow the booking form’s instructions. Check your passport details and bring the same original passport to the airport.
| Check | Look for |
|---|---|
| Airports | The exact departure and arrival airports, plus the terminal when available |
| Total price | Checked baggage, cabin allowance and any optional extras |
| Flexibility | Change and refund conditions, and the airline operating the flight |
Save the issued ticket confirmation and booking reference offline.

Pack for Your Flight
Check your specific fare before packing. Checked baggage may cost extra, and cabin size and weight limits vary by airline and fare. Do not assume the suitcase accepted on your international flight will qualify on a separate domestic ticket.
What about larger power banks and liquids?
Power banks above 100Wh and up to 160Wh require airline approval; stricter airline limits may apply. Above 160Wh is prohibited. Buying abroad does not automatically exempt a device from CCC checks. If your cabin bag is checked at the gate, remove power banks first.
Empty your water bottle before security. Domestic liquid rules differ from international ones; check cosmetics and essential liquid medicines with your airline before packing.
At the Airport
For your first domestic flight, we suggest arriving about two hours before departure, with extra time for busy holidays or a large, unfamiliar airport. Follow any earlier arrival advice from your airline. Check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines are separate and vary.
Find the correct terminal.
Check the full airport name: Shanghai Pudong and Shanghai Hongqiao are different airports.
Check in and drop your bag.
Have your passport ready at the operating airline’s counter if you need a boarding pass or document checks. Keep the baggage receipt.
Go through security.
Keep your passport and boarding pass accessible and follow staff instructions for screening your belongings.
Find your gate.
Check the departure screens for changes and reach the gate before boarding closes, not at the flight’s departure time.
Collect your luggage on arrival.
Match your flight number to the baggage carousel, then follow signs for the metro, airport bus or official taxi rank.
Once you are through security, you can settle into the journey. Keep an eye on the screens while you get a drink or something to eat.
If You Need Help
Online check-in is not working
Online check-in depends on the airline, airport and booking. An unsuccessful attempt does not by itself mean your ticket is invalid. Confirm that your ticket has been issued, then complete check-in at the airline’s airport counter with your original passport before its deadline.
My flight is delayed, cancelled or missed
Check the airline’s latest notice and contact your booking provider about the options for your ticket. At the airport, ask airline staff for help. Before buying a replacement, clarify what happens to the original booking and any onward flights.
