Lakes in China

Colors & Reflections
At Kanas and Jiuzhaigou, blue and green waters sit among forested slopes. Farther west, Yamdrok’s turquoise arms wind between highland hills. Light, water depth and the viewing angle help shape the colors seen across these landscapes. Reflections add another layer, with trees, clouds and distant peaks appearing on the surface when the water is still.
Salt lakes bring a different palette. Ulan Lake can turn red against the dunes of the Tengger Desert, while calm, shallow water at Chaka reflects the sky above pale salt flats. Qarhan combines green brine pools, salt formations and working salt pans. Weather, water levels and seasonal conditions all influence how these landscapes look during a visit.

Landscapes & Exploration
The setting is as distinctive as the water. Changbai Mountain’s Tianchi fills a volcanic crater enclosed by steep peaks, while grasslands meet Sayram Lake in the Tianshan. Namtso’s broad waters stretch beneath distant mountains on the Tibetan Plateau. Both Namtso and Yamdrok are sacred lakes in Tibetan tradition, connecting their striking scenery with local beliefs and pilgrimage.
Exploring these lakes often means moving between viewpoints. Lakeside paths bring you close to ripples and reflections, while elevated overlooks reveal winding shores and crater walls. Use the walking routes and viewing areas available at each destination, keeping to designated paths around delicate salt crusts. Leave time for clouds to clear or for the light to change.
