Ancient Villages in China

From hillside wooden homes to earthen courtyards and cave dwellings, China’s historic villages reveal different ways of building, living and keeping traditions alive.

Inside Xijiang Miao Village

In the mountains of southeastern Guizhou, Xijiang Miao Village spreads across the slopes above the Baishui River. Wooden houses follow the contours of the hills, creating layers of tiled roofs against a green mountain backdrop. From above, the view reveals an entire settlement shaped by its landscape.

The village’s character extends beyond its buildings. Miao embroidery, silver ornaments and traditional dress reflect skills passed between generations. Today, Xijiang is both a residential community and a busy visitor destination, where homes, craft businesses and guesthouses form part of village life.

Village Traditions Across China

Across China, village architecture changes with the landscape and the needs of its communities. Hongcun’s whitewashed houses gather around ponds and waterways. At Tianluokeng, substantial earthen buildings were designed for communal living, while Lijiashan’s cave dwellings and courtyards rise in tiers along a hillside. Each offers a different view of the Chinese village.

Shared spaces and seasonal customs are equally revealing. In Zhaoxing, wooden drum towers serve as gathering places for the Dong community. In Huangling, the tradition of drying harvested crops brings color to the village. Together, these places connect distinctive architecture with the customs and activities that give it meaning.
