Pottery in Jingdezhen

In Jingdezhen, a pottery studio offers a different way to spend an afternoon. Sit at the wheel, get clay on your hands and watch a shape slowly emerge. A slightly uneven rim can become part of the charm—the small detail that makes the piece yours.

Try shaping clay on a wheel, building a small piece by hand, or painting a ceramic blank. Between your own attempts, watch how confidently experienced hands work with the same materials. It gives the bowls and cups you see around the city a little more meaning.

Craft Traditions Across China

Across China, different materials invite different kinds of creativity. In Dali, tied and folded cloth opens to reveal patterns in indigo and white. Elsewhere, a sheet of red paper becomes a delicate design, bamboo strips form a woven pattern, and a carved wooden block leaves its image on paper.

Choose something that catches your eye and give yourself time to enjoy the process. Watch a demonstration, try the movements and see what takes shape. The pleasure is in the making: a quiet moment of concentration, an unexpected pattern, or a small success you can share with your travelling companions.
