Hanfu in Xi’an
Hanfu refers to the dress traditions of Han Chinese people.2 In Xi’an, flowing sleeves and layered robes feel at home among Tang-inspired courtyards and gardens, including Tang Paradise.1, 3 Wearing an outfit can turn a sightseeing stop into a more memorable part of your trip.
Local studios offer outfit rentals, with optional hairstyling, makeup and photography. Once dressed, leave time for a relaxed wander: pause in a courtyard, enjoy the surroundings and take a few photographs. Couples, friends and families can share the experience, with clothing options varying by studio.4

China’s Many Dress Traditions
China’s long history has shaped many dress traditions, reflecting different dynasties, regions and ethnic communities. Hanfu itself includes looks inspired by periods such as the Tang, Song and Ming, with different cuts, layers and accessories. Today’s visitor outfits vary in how closely they follow historical clothing.2, 4
Beyond hanfu, you might try Shanghai’s elegant qipao, discover Miao embroidery and silver adornments, or wear Dai dress in tropical Yunnan.5, 6, 7, 8 Each has its own background, with styles that vary between places and communities. The experiences below offer different ways to explore these traditions as you travel through China.
