Dunes & Changing Light

Climbing a sand dune changes your sense of distance. At Mingsha Mountain near Dunhuang, each rise reveals another ridge, while Crescent Lake lies in a hollow surrounded by sand. As the sun lowers, shadows deepen along the slopes and fine ripples become easier to see. Staying to watch the changing light can be as memorable as reaching the top.

The scenery varies across northern and northwestern China. In Badain Jaran, immense dunes surround lakes tucked into the hollows between them. The Taklamakan stretches across much of the Tarim Basin, crossed by long desert highways. At Kumtag, sand dunes rise beside the oasis town of Shanshan, bringing the desert remarkably close to everyday urban life.

Oases & Exploration

Water has helped shape life around the desert. Dunhuang grew as an oasis on the Silk Roads, where merchants, travelers and religious traditions met. Its nearby Mogao Caves preserve traces of those exchanges in paintings and sculptures. At Shapotou, on the southeastern edge of the Tengger Desert, the Yellow River flows beside the dunes.

Camel rides and sand sliding bring a more playful side to a desert visit. Xiangshawan, in the Kubuqi Desert, combines these activities with resort stays, while Shapotou pairs dune excursions with river experiences. Choose organized activities and designated routes, and allow time between them to enjoy the views, especially as the light softens toward evening.
