Culture, Prayer & Tradition
At many temples, worshippers offer incense, bow before shrines and pray for health, peace or their families’ well-being. Some come with a particular hope; others return to give thanks. Alongside monastic practice and seasonal ceremonies, these personal acts of devotion connect temples with the concerns and rhythms of everyday life.
Temple traditions also reach into poetry and pilgrimage. Hanshan Temple’s bells are remembered in a celebrated Tang poem, while pilgrims walk devotional circuits around the Jokhang in Lhasa. White Horse Temple recalls Buddhism’s early arrival in China. Together, these places show how religious traditions have become part of a wider cultural history.

Architecture & Sacred Art
Temple buildings reveal different eras and cultural influences. Longxing Temple preserves the Northern Song–era Moni Hall, while Beijing’s Lama Temple combines Qing imperial architecture with Tibetan Buddhist traditions. At the Jokhang, Tibetan architecture reflects exchanges with India, Nepal and other parts of China. Centuries of rebuilding mean that a temple’s origins often reach further back than its surviving halls.
Sculpture offers another way to explore these traditions. A towering sandalwood Buddha stands inside the Lama Temple, while Longxing houses a monumental bronze Guanyin. At Ta’er Monastery, colorful butter sculptures depict Buddhist figures and stories, serving as religious offerings as well as intricate works of art. Look closely at their materials, expressions and gestures to discover how craftsmanship gives visible form to devotion.
